The San Diego County Office of Education, San Diego Science Project, and California Science Project are pleased to announce our 2023-2024 professional learning series designed to build K-12 teacher’s understanding and skills in designing and implementing a student-centered assessment system in their classroom aligned to the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS). Participating teachers build their assessment literacy skills as they create a vision for student-centered classroom assessment, learn to use tools to analyze assessment tasks, and design equitable formative and summative science assessment tasks.

Course 1 - Foundations of NGSS Assessment
In this two-day professional learning course, participants use various tools and processes to build a foundational understanding of NGSS assessment and equitable assessment systems. They build a vision for equitable science assessment in their classroom and begin to analyze and evaluate available assessment tasks against that vision.
This is a foundational course and is a prerequisite for other coursework in the SDCOE Student-Centered Assessment professional learning series.

Course 2 - Curriculum Anchored Assessment
In this two-day professional learning course, participants choose a unit of instruction and analyze it with the path of student thinking and learning in mind. They then identify and flag key assessment moments across the unit and evaluate those assessments against their vision for equitable science assessment they developed in Course 1. Finally, they determine possible next steps to improve the system of assessments in the unit of instruction. Participants in this course must have access to a set of instructional materials they want to analyze.

Course 3 - Designing Equitable 3D Assessment Tasks
In this two-day professional learning course, participants learn about and engage in a multi-step process to develop a 3D assessment task that can be used in a classroom setting. Using a backwards design approach, they use identified assessment targets to design a sensemaking task where students demonstrate their understanding of a phenomenon/problem. The task to be designed will include a carefully constructed scenario and series of prompts to guide students as they engage in sensemaking using the three dimensions of NGSS. Peer feedback protocols will be used to improve the designed task.

Course 4 - Generating and Looking at Student Work in Assessment
In this two-day professional learning course, participants learn about how to use student work collected from medium cycle assessment tasks to determine how much students have learned, identify strengths and areas for growth of students, and identify strengths and areas for growth in assessment design and instructional practice. Participants learn about how to identify and embed meaningful assessment opportunities in a lesson or learning sequence. They consider ways of using student work from these assessments to inform instruction and guide student learning.
